Planet Word Museum

Creating a Love for Words and Language

Challenge

Planet Word, a first-of-a-kind, immersive museum where “language comes to life,” needed materials designed for their groundbreaking ceremony. When the museum opens to the public in 2020, it will be a place where all visitors can leave with a renewed appreciation for the crucial role of words and language in our lives. We were tasked with creating a collection of marketing materials, including a digital invite, press kit, banners, and even the actual shovels for groundbreaking. The ceremony was attended by DC’s Mayor Muriel Bowser and author Jason Reynolds and included performances by Jazzlyn Ford, Flo Anito, and Aniyah Smith.

Approach

We drew inspiration for the design from the museum’s mission and vision to instill a love of language and learning while also creating an experience that’s fun and exciting. We struck a balance between playful and sophisticated by using a palette of bright colors drawn from the exhibit design and introducing text as a visual element. We developed a collection of words—amaze, discover, create, interact, build, learn—to help paint a picture of the anticipated visitor experience at the museum. Continuing our partnership with Planet Word, we're now gearing up for the museum's grand opening.
