Capital Area Food Bank
Brighter Spaces Making Better Futures
Challenge
The Capital Area Food Bank’s Washington, DC headquarters was interested in bringing more energy and visual interest to one of their warehouse spaces in order to inspire volunteers and employees. CAFB wanted to share the message that access to healthy food doesn’t just nourish the body, it helps improve people’s lives holistically. Building off environmental graphics we previously created for another space on site, we needed to evoke CAFB’s mission and brand to enliven a vast multi-purpose warehouse space used for events, storage, packing food, and prepping groceries for delivery.
Approach
To make the space feel more manageable, we created three distinct visual areas of the warehouse based on CAFB’s mission “Good food today. Brighter futures tomorrow.” To tie the areas together, a series of banners featuring CAFB’s impact statements were hung from the ceiling. In the largest area of the warehouse—where food is packed and events are held—a 40-foot mural was installed depicting nutritious foods as an energizing force that positively impacts six areas of people’s lives: equity, health, employment, education, and community. We wrapped a walk-in freezer with key phrases and illustrative elements that celebrate CAFB’s programs and volunteers Finally, floor-to-ceiling graphics of a Curbside Groceries’ mobile market truck were hung on their exterior office walls to highlight this vital CAFB program.
