Planet Word Museum
Celebrating a Love for Language
Challenge
Planet Word Museum in Washington, DC hosted its inaugural fundraising gala in the fall of 2022. The museum wanted to create a unique visual identity for its gala that was on theme with the season, the pageantry of the evening, and the subject matter of the museum—renewing and inspiring a love of words and language. The invitee list for the event was limited so digital Save the Date announcements were created first to enable most of the allotted budget to be used on a traditional, keepsake-printed invitation.
Approach
An event logo with customized typography was developed based on the theme "Fall for Words"—the double meaning of the fall evening for the event and the play on one's love of language. With the museum's branding in mind, a rich two-color palette was selected. Illustrative fall foliage and a pattern of twinkling dots and letterforms were introduced to create the illusion of falling words. As the invitee opened the invitation, it was removed from a die-cut enclosure. As they pulled the invite out from the enclosure, a gold foil backdrop is relieved through a die-cut pattern of circles that give the illusion of falling stars or leaves. In addition to the invitation, a suite of on-site materials was designed as a combination of tangible printed elements and digital graphics for presentations and signage.
