Understanding the Impact of Hunger & Inequity
Challenge
The Washington, DC area has seen a dramatic rise in food insecurity since the start of the pandemic in 2020. The increased need for food aid has underscored the urgent need to develop more reliable systems for distributing food to our neighbors in need, and to address food insecurity in conjunction with more profound inequities. For the past four years, we have collaborated with the Capital Area Food Bank to present data on the pandemic's impact on hunger and inequity through a compelling and engaging digital report.
Approach
The digital reports focus on the reading experience to encourage deep engagement. A sophisticated, restrained look, combined with subtle animation and simple functionality, ensures that the report content can take center stage and reflects the serious nature of the findings. Original data visualizations present key takeaways, and illustrative graphics support conceptual understanding, inspiring action to help solve hunger in the DMV area and beyond.
